Por vezes lembro-me de filmes sem nenhuma razão aparente. Nos últimos tempos tenho-me lembrado de um filme que vi em 2004 ou 2005 – Room With a View (1985). É um filme muito bonito, sobretudo a parte que se passa em Veneza. No fundo é o que todos queremos, a room with a view. Tenho visto este filme por aí em promoções relacionadas com os Óscares – Comprem-no e regozijem!
Multi-candidato aos Óscares. Filme que promete grandes coisas na noite de x de Março, desilude muito na sala de cinema. É um filme que explora várias metáforas - todas demasiado explícitas, num filme completamente mastigado e feito para não pensantes. Toda a premissa da solidão num ambiente repleto de pessoas é muito interessante, mas só se for bem explorada. Quando apenas há um pequeno afloramento sem nenhum tipo de confronto e descoberta de sentimentos, é um filme médiozinho a dar para o fraco. Por mim pode ir para a prateleira de filmes de Domingo à tarde a evitar.
Mas o filme não é todo mau, há bons momentos que podemos juntar em 5 minutos de filme. E aí talvez tivéssemos uma curta aceitável, não boa, apenas aceitável.

Um dos personagens principais deste filme é interpretado por Paul Walker. E aqui encontramos o propósito deste post – Paul Walker éum péssimo, péssimo actor. É capaz de ombrear com Keanu Reeves - já por aqui foi mencionado por várias vezes e por mim nomeado como o pior actor vivo. Mas Keanu tem uma grande vantagem sobre este seu evil twin, consegue escolher bem os filmes em que participa. Contando no seu registo pessoal com filmes muito bons, tal como o grande “The Devil's Advocate” (1997). Walker, pelo que tenho dele visto, não partilha esta inteligência na condução da sua carreira.
Antevejo a génese de um actor ainda pior que K. Reeves, o mundo tem que ter medo muito medo. Ai o medinho...
A baixo transcrevo o poema de William Earnest Henley (1849–1903). Intitulado “Invictus” por Arthur Quiller-Couch em 1900 aquando da sua inclusão no “The Oxford Book Of English Verse”. Aqui está o poema publicado em 1888:
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance

No filme Invictus (2009) de Clint Eastwood, este poema tem um papel muito importante, ao ser entregue por Mandela ao capitão da selecção nacional de Rugby Sul Africana e por inspirá-lo a ganhar o campeonato do mundo, carregando e unificando assim, uma nação dividida por diferenças culturais e raciais. No entanto o texto que, factualmente, Mandela entregou a Pienaar for um excerto do discurso de Theodore Roosevelt “The Man in the Arena” proferido em 1910 numa visita à Sorbonne em Paris. Abaixo segue o excerto que se considera o mais emblemático do dito discurso:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
Chegou aquela altura do ano em todas as nossas anteninhas cinéfilas se direccionam para Los Angeles. Os nomeados para as estatuetas douradas foram anunciados. Estão fresquinhas como a brisa da manhã num dia de Primavera.
Este ano com a já conhecida novidade de haver 10 nomeados para melhor filme. Não é inédito, nas décadas de 30 e 40 era frequente a nomeação de dez filmes para a categoria rainha dos Oscars. Em 1934 e 1935 os nomeados atingiram o número recorde de 12. Na edição de 1945 o número passou a ser fixo, 5 nomeados, norma que se manteve até 2009. Este passo por parte da academia encerra uma preocupação e uma viragem por parte da academia que assim passa a dar hipótese de concorre a melhor filme do ano, filmes com aspirações artisticas mais limitadas. Estes filmes são normalmente grandes sucessos de bilheteira e por agradar a um grande número de espectadores. Temos assim, como de resto já seria de esperar, blockbusters e filmes de animação, que normalmente não encontravam espaço para entrar nos 5 nomeados, na corrida.
O que espoletou esta alteração? Para mim foi a não nomeação de “Wall.e” para melhor filme na edição de 2009 da cerimónia.

Como nota de rodapé, queria apenas referir que a norma se mantém, Meryl Streep mais uma vez nomeada - pela 15ª vez. Os também veteranos de nomeações Daniel Day Lewis e Clint Eastwood falham as nomeações para este ano. O filme revelação, “District 9”, consegue garantir um lugar entre os 10 magnificos. O que não acontece com os quasi-homónimos “Nine” para melhor filme e “9” para melhor animação. E estes foram os meus primeiros tuppence worth sobre os nomeados 2010 para os Óscares da Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
